US textile import volume declines sharply in July, while the apparel imports hits a new high

The latest data showed that US textile and apparel imports value in Jul 2022 increased to 12.1 billion USD, up by 5.7% year-on-year. The imports volume was 6.72 billion m2, decreased sharply by 24.7% year-on-year. US apparel imports value in Jul 2022 rose sharply to 9.3 billion USD, up by 33.6% year-on-year, and the imports volume reached 2.94 billion m2, up by 17.3% year-on-year. The fact that US apparel import value saw obvious rise when the total volume decreased significantly showed that, the imports of low-priced textile reduced substantially. As a result, the apparel import value witnessed a huge reversed growth.

The US textile and apparel imports volume from China in Jul 2022 reached 3.21billion m2, down by 9% year-on-year. The imports value reached 3.59billion USD, up by 26.7% year-on-year. US apparel imports value from China in Jul 2022 toppled 1.27 billion USD, up by 22.7% year-on-year, and the imports volume reached 2.54 billion m2, up by 39.4% year-on-year.

It is worth noticing that, in Jul, the value of both the textile and apparel imports and the apparel imports from China reached a new high since 2019, and its share in US imports rebounded significantly.

In view of the year-on-year growth of US textile and apparel imports, the import volume from EU countries declined sharply by 80%. While the import from Cambodia, India and Vietnam all scored an over 30% growth. With respect to the import value, the value from Cambodia reached 73.28%, and that from Indonesia increased by 53.14%.

As for US apparel imports, both import volume and value saw large growth this month. In Jul, US apparel imports from ASEAN countries and China increased, the sum of which accounted for 56.68% of the total import value, and rose by 3.11% compared with the same period in 2021. The imports proportion of Bangladesh decreased from 8.13% to 7.43%, and that of India dropped from 4.07% to 5.31%.
