The latest data shows that in September, India's textile and apparel exports reached $2.92 billion, marking a year-on-year increase of 12.4%. For the first nine months of the year, cumulative exports grew by 5.3% compared to the same period last year. Month by month, textile and apparel exports showed growth each month from January to September, except for a decline in January. Notably, the recovery in clothing exports outpaced that of textiles.

In terms of export composition, clothing made up the largest share, accounting for just over 40%, followed by cotton yarn, fabric, and related products at nearly a third. Synthetic yarn and fabric products contributed around 13%, while handicrafts (excluding handmade carpets), carpets, and jute products, including floor coverings, had relatively smaller shares.

Among these categories, which contributed the most this year? Compared to the same period last year, the export shares of handicrafts (excluding handmade carpets), carpets, and clothing saw the most significant gains, with increases of 0.6, 0.2, and 0.1 percentage points, respectively. Meanwhile, cotton yarn and fabric products, synthetic yarn and fabric, and jute manufacturing (including floor coverings) saw their shares decline by 0.6, 0.5, and 0.1 percentage points, respectively.

In summary, India's textile and clothing exports have been recovering in the first three quarters of this year, with stronger growth seen in clothing, carpets, and handicrafts (excluding handmade carpets) compared to the traditionally dominant yarn and fabric products.
