China's coal, crude oil and natural gas production and imports in May 2024

The production of raw coal dropped at a slower pace while imports kept fast growth. In May 2024, the output of raw coal from industrial enterprises above designated size was 380 million tons, down 0.8 percent from the same period last year, which was 2.1 percentage points lower than that in April. The average daily output was 12.382 million tons. Imported coal was 43.82 million tons in May, an increase of 10.7 percent over the same period last year, data from National Statistics Bureau showed.

In Jan-May 2024, raw coal production reached 1.86 billion tons, down 3.0 percent from the same period last year; and coal imports amounted to 200 million tons, up 12.6 percent from the same period last year.

Crude oil production increased steadily and import growth decelerated. In May, the output of crude oil from industrial enterprises above designated size was 18.15 million tons, an increase of 0.6 percent over the same period last year, which was 0.7 percentage points lower than that in April. The average daily output was 585,000 tons. Imported crude oil was 46.97 million tons in May, a decrease of 8.7 percent over the same period last year.

In Jan-May 2024, crude oil production reached 89.10 million tons, up 1.8 percent from the same period last year; and crude oil imports amounted to 229.03 million tons, down 0.4 percent from the same period last year.

Crude oil processing volume dropped. In May, the processing volume of crude oil was 60.52 million tons, a decrease of 1.8 percent over the same period last year, down 1.5 percentage points from April. The average daily processing was 1.952 million tons. In Jan-May 2024, crude oil processing volume totaled 301.77 million tons, up 0.3 percent on year.

The growth rate of natural gas production was steady, and imports maintained a relatively rapid growth. In May, the output of natural gas from industrial enterprises above designated size was 20.3 billion cubic meters, an increase of 6.3 percent over the same period last year, and the growth rate was 3.1 percentage points higher than that in April, with an average daily output of 650 million cubic meters. Imports of natural gas were 11.33 million tons, an increase of 7.1 percent over the same period last year.

In Jan-May 2024, natural gas production reached 103.3 billion cubic meters, up 5.2 percent from the same period last year; and the imports amounted to 54.28 million tons, up 17.4 percent from the same period last year.
