2022/23 Xinjiang cotton quality analysis (by Dec, 2022)

By Dec 31, 2022, inspection volumes of Xinjiang cotton totaled 2.9365 million tons, down 36% year on year.

1. Color index

By end Dec, the proportion of white, grade-3 cotton and above in total 2022/23 Xinjiang cotton reached 84.7%, up 2.8 percentage point from end Nov, but down 1.4 percentage point from the same period of last year. The proportion of white, grade-2 cotton and white, grade-4 cotton was up 0.9 and 0.1 percentage point from last year.

By end Dec, the proportion of cotton with length at 28mm and above reached 94.1%, flat from end Nov, but down 2.5 percentage point from the same period of last year. Proportion of cotton with length at 29mm and above was 56.6%, up 0.1 percentage point from end Nov, but down 9.9 percentage point from the same period of last year.

By end Dec, cotton that can meet the demand of Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange on strength reached 98.7%, down 0.1 percentage point from end Nov, but up 0. 85 percentage point from the same period of last year. By end Dec, the proportion of cotton with strength at 29gpt and above was 48.97%, down 0.56 percentage point from end Nov, up 4.41 percentage point from last year.

By end Dec, proportion of cotton that can meet the demand of Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange approached 99.9%, up 0.28 percentage point from last year.

Conclusion

New cotton inspection speed is slow impacted by the epidemic, which cannot be analyzed well on the cotton quality from the volumes, and the quality is mainly analyzed from the proportion. In Dec, the color and micronaire indicators of new cotton improve from Nov, while other indicators change little.

By Dec, 2022, new cotton that can meet the demand of ZCE takes a share of 84.7%, which is mainly dragged down by color index. Proportion of cotton with length at 29mm and strength at 29gpt and above is 48.97%, down 0.56 percentage point from end Nov, up 4.41 percentage point from last year, but proportion of length at 29mm and above is 56.6%, down 9.9 percentage point from the same period of last year. In addition, the Fiber Inspection Bureau has not published the indicator of trash content, and it is heard that the trash content is higher than last year.
