How to identify true silk?

Some artificial fibers can imitate silk to perfection. It is hard to distinguish between these fibers and real silk simply by looking at or touching a piece of fabric. However, it is possible to identify silk by burning the fabric or just a few yarns. Silk does not burn. If you bring silk fibers close to a flame, nothing will happen. Place the fibers close to a flame, they will catch the fire. But as soon as you move them away from the flame, the fire will go out. A small grey crumbly ball forms at the tip of the fibers. If you pinch it between your fingers,, only grey ashes will remain. Smell the silk sample: it gives off a burnt horn smell. Artificial fibers will recoil from a flame. Once a flame is moved away, the fibers will continue to burn and will quickly consume. A hard, dark ball appears at the end of the fibers, which smells of burnt plastic.
