The history of carpets produced and used in Inner Mongolia is very long. A boundless stretch of big plain was nourishing countless sheep and the wool of aboriginal sheep produced here is flexible and bright and it is the best wool for carpet knitting. The life style of Mongolian people makes the carpet producing and use become an important part of their life.

The variety of Baotou carpet was more. Except less carpets were used by the temples, the majority of carpets were used among the people including ground carpet, hanging carpet, Kang ( a kind of bed) rug, couch carpet, seat rug, saddle and camel saddle, etc. the patterns of Baotou carpets were very rich in including Bogu veins, various Treasures, Eight Lucky Things, etc. Chinese traditional culture was presented on Baotou carpets through the patterns style and it was recognized widely among the people.

The main color of Baotou carpet was blue consisted of dark blue, light blue and white called “white and three blue” or put some red and other colors on the “white and three blue” pattern to form “three-blue with colors:. The “whit and three blue” Baotou carpet in north of China was famous as well as the blue flowers porcelain in south of China. In addition, some Baotou carpets were dyed with other colors, such as deep red, apricot yellow, arrange, etc. These colors were often used in the temple.
